Tintwistle cruise past Offerton in the Cup
Match Report by Ryan Nixon
Tintwistle CC travelled to Offerton on Saturday on a day you can describe as perfect cricketing weather, not a cloud in the sky and a subtle breeze to help. T-shirt tans were on the cards for the players!
Tintwistle Skipper James Pool won the toss for the second week running and chose to bat on a pitch where a big score was expected. TCC welcomed back last year’s top run scorer Karl Handforth as he opened the batting with Gavin Cole. No rust was left over from last week’s defeat as the opening pair made a solid start with both batsman looking confident before Handforth (29) was caught trying to turn the ball around the corner.
Matt Robinson joined Cole as the pair put on 9 before Cole (14) was bowled by a jaffa from Ahmad. Kez Davies walked to the crease to join Robinson as the pair added 28 with Davies playing with some great cricket shots. However, the partnership was broken when Robinson gifted Pickles his first wicket caught at extra cover. Vice-captain Ryan Nixon joined Davies at the crease and the pair looked to use their natural attacking ability to score quickly against the hosts. A rush of blood from Nixon saw him stumped off the slow bowling of Pickles for 23. The score at this stage was 108-4. Captain Pool joined Davies at the crease and continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Just as Nixon has done earlier in the day, Pool also walked past the slow bowling of Pickles and gifted Thelwell his second stumping of the match.
Dee Patel (4) and Gaz Jones (2) came and went without much work for the scorers. Martin Harris joined the charge scoring a quick fire 30 off 20 balls. Harris and Davies took the score from 164-7 to 209-8. Coming into the final stages of the innings Davies looked to have some fun and get close to his 100 but was bowled for a beautifully played 69. Tintwistle ended their innings with 3 balls to spare as they were bowled out for 214.
Half time thoughts were that the batting display was much better than last week but wickets were given away too cheaply. Credit to the tea ladies from Offerton who put on an amazing cricket tea.
Missing the bowling of Stuart Chamley, Pool opted to use Alex Brown as his replacement and he didn’t let his skipper down claiming the wicket of opener Thelwell for a Golden Duck in his first over. Last week’s tight bowling spell for Robinson couldn’t be carried over this week as he could only manage one over before limping off with a groin injury – a huge blow for Tintwistle. However, up stepped Jones as he reduced the hosts to 14-2. Wickets fell in regular intervals as Brown claimed two wickets in one over. Offerton were 27-4 when a small partnership arose frustrating the Tintwistle bowlers until Rose bowled Pickles and Kirkham in the space of 3 balls. A little burst of big hitting from Ahmad took the score up to 69 before Stuart Rose ripped through the home side. Offerton were bowled out for 74 in 26.2 overs.
Rose finished the innings with incredible figures of 6 for 9 from just 5.2 overs. Alex Brown bowled a fantastic spell of 8 overs claiming figures of 3 for 22
A much better performance from Tintwistle this week. The team will need to step up their game more as they host Hayfield at Speedwell next weekend. However, great to progress in the Bissenden Cup.
